Is There a Trailer for The Woman King?

Undoubtedly, there is a trailer! The trailer, which was released on July 6, 2022, provides a peek at the terrible savagery that threatens Dahomey as well as the Dahomey Amazons’ training methods. You may view the trailer beneath:

What is the Plot of the Woman King?

Due to the fact that The Woman King is a historical epic based on actual events, considerable context is required to comprehend the complexity of its plot.

In the late 1800s, in the West African Nation of Dahomey, an all-female military regiment known as the Agojie must battle for the lives and independence of their kingdom against outside aggressors.

Historians have dubbed these women “Dahomey Amazons” because of their resemblance to the mythological Amazons.

Due to the high mortality rate of men in the kingdom as a result of continual warfare with other West African powers and the slave trade, women were recruited into the military and eventually dominated it.

When European armies invade the Kingdom of Dahomey, General Nanisca (Davis) faces a threat to the kingdom. The epic struggle she wages against them is modeled on the 1890-1894 Franco-Dahomeyan war.

Thuso Mbedu portrays Nawi, an ambitious new recruit featured in Nanisca (The Underground Railroad). Nawi is based on the real-life “last Dahomey Amazon” with the same name.

Nawi claimed in a 1978 interview to have fought the French in 1982. She passed away in 1979, much past the age of one hundred.

The Dahomey Amazons, also known as “Agojie,” have appeared in numerous different works of popular culture prior to The Woman King, most recently in the 2018 Marvel Cinematic Universe film The Black Panther.

Lupita Nyong’o, who played T’Challa’s ex-lover Nakia in Black Panther, was able to interview descendants of the Dahomey Amazons in 2019 after being captivated by their effect on the formation of the Dora Milaje in Marvel Comics and films.

The Director of the Woman King

Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film’s director, is the one who steers the ship that is The Woman King.

Prince-Bythewood is well-known in the Hollywood industry due to the fact that she has directed multiple episodes of a variety of television shows, such as The Bernie Mac Show, Girlfriends, Everybody Hates Chris, Cloak & Dagger, and Shots Fired.

In addition, she was the director of the films “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Beyond the Lights,” and “Love & Basketball.”
