Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lange was born on 11 November 1948 in Mufulira, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) under the sign of Scorpio.
He is a 73-year-old record producer and songwriter who is best known for creating many of rock’s most popular albums, collaborating with prominent musicians such as AC/DC, The Cars, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, and Nickelback.
Early Years
Lange was given the name Robert John Lange when he was born in Mufulira, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) on November 11, 1948. His parents raised him in Durban, South Africa.
His mother was German and from a wealthy family, whereas his father was a mining engineer from South Africa. Lange was given the moniker Mutt at a young age and grew up listening to music continuously.
In his youth, he was a particular enthusiast of country music. Lange attended Belfast High School in the present-day province of Mpumalanga.
In that location, he formed a band in which he played rhythm guitar and sang harmony. Lange did his mandatory national service from 1966 to 1967. After completing his studies, he opted to pursue a career in music.
Career
Lange co-founded the band Sound Reason with South African television, cinema, and stage actor James Borthwick in 1969. Lange formed a new group, Hocus, in 1971 after the group’s existence was short-lived.
The band went on to record and release one album and five singles. He moved to the United Kingdom to increase his possibilities within the music industry.
In 1976, he began his career as a music producer, but it was not until a few years later that he produced his first hit record. He began working with the British band City Boy in 1976 and produced five of their albums between 1976 and 1979.
1978 saw his production of The Boomtown Rats’ chart-topping single “Rat Trap” He also produced “Ipswich Get That Goal,” the FA Cup final single for Ipswich Town. He agreed since the side included a player from South Africa named Colin Viljoen.
In July of 1979, he produced the hard rock album “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC, which topped the U.K. charts at number eight.
He maintained his collaboration with AC/DC by producing two more of their albums, including the 1990s “Back in Black,” one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Additionally, he contributed to records by Foreigner and Def Leppard. He worked on “High ‘n’ Dry,” “Pyromania,” “Hysteria,” and “Adrenalize” in particular.
He took a sabbatical from working with Def Leppard for several years, but rejoined the band in 1999 for their album “Euphoria.” Lange was portrayed by Anthony Michael Hall in the 2001 television film “Hysteria – The Def Leppard Story.” This film chronicled Lange’s work with Def Leppard.
Throughout the 1980s, Lange also collaborated with The Cars, Rome’s Daughter, and Billy Ocean, in addition to AC/DC and Def Leppard.
Lange began working with Bryan Adams in the 1990s and produced his album “Waking Up the Neighbors.” “Everything I Do, I Do It For You” was co-written by him and featured in the Kevin Costner film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.”
The song topped the U.K. singles chart and holds the record for the longest amount of consecutive weeks at the top. Throughout the 1990s, he also produced albums and songs for Michael Bolton, Stevie Vann, The Backstreet Boys, and Shania Twain.
In the 2000s, he produced albums and singles for artists including Shania Twain, Muse, Maroon 5, Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears. In his career, two of the albums he has produced and three of the songs he has produced have won Grammy Awards.

Lange strictly adheres to a vegetarian diet. In addition, he is a devotee of the esoteric philosophy movement Sant Mat. Additionally, he is concerned with ecology and conservation.
In 2011, Lange purchased a big parcel of land on a mountain in Queenstown, New Zealand, known as Coronet Peak Station. As of 2014, he had covenanted around 400,000 acres of land, making it the largest private conservation covenant in New Zealand.
Lange is typically a reclusive individual who prefers to avoid the spotlight. Most of his time is spent in seclusion at his residence in La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland.
