Lange was given the name Robert John Lange when he was born in Mufulira, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) on November 11, 1948. His parents raised him in Durban, South Africa.

His mother was German and from a wealthy family, whereas his father was a mining engineer from South Africa. Lange was given the moniker Mutt at a young age and grew up listening to music continuously.

1978 saw his production of The Boomtown Rats’ chart-topping single “Rat Trap” He also produced “Ipswich Get That Goal,” the FA Cup final single for Ipswich Town. He agreed since the side included a player from South Africa named Colin Viljoen.

In July of 1979, he produced the hard rock album “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC, which topped the U.K. charts at number eight.

Throughout the 1980s, Lange also collaborated with The Cars, Rome’s Daughter, and Billy Ocean, in addition to AC/DC and Def Leppard.

Lange began working with Bryan Adams in the 1990s and produced his album “Waking Up the Neighbors.” “Everything I Do, I Do It For You” was co-written by him and featured in the Kevin Costner film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.”

The song topped the U.K. singles chart and holds the record for the longest amount of consecutive weeks at the top. Throughout the 1990s, he also produced albums and songs for Michael Bolton, Stevie Vann, The Backstreet Boys, and Shania Twain.
