Ellen began doing her stand-up comedy routines in coffee houses and tiny clubs during the years when she was working odd jobs. By 1981, Ellen was the emcee at Clyde’s Comedy Club in New Orleans.
In the early 1980s, she began touring the country with her stand-up routine. In 1984, Showtime dubbed her the Funniest Person in America. In 1989, she received her first regular television role on the Fox sitcom “Open House.” In 1992, she was cast in the incredibly short-lived sitcom Laurie Hill.
ABC hired DeGeneres in their upcoming pilot, “These Friends of Mine,” because the producers were so impressed with her. In its second season, the show was renamed to “Ellen.”
In April 1997, when DeGeneres came out as a lesbian on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Ellen” was at its most popular. Her character on the show came out to her therapist, portrayed by Oprah Winfrey, at the same time.
Due to ABC’s reduced promotion of the show, “Ellen” was canceled in May 1998 due to declining ratings.
Once her series was canceled, DeGeneres returned to the stand-up tour. She reemerged in 2001 with “The Ellen Show,” a 13-episode CBS sitcom that was canceled. She provided the voice of Dory in “Finding Nemo” in 2003. She reprised this role in “Finding Dory” (2012).
The debut of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” occurred in the fall of 2003. Today, it is one of the most-watched daytime television talk shows.
The show won 25 Emmy Awards in its first three seasons alone. On May 1, 2009, Ellen celebrated her 100th episode. Her 2000th performance was in December 2015.
In 2010, DeGeneres joined “American Idol” as a judge. She replaced Paula Abdul. She quit after one season, stating that the position “didn’t feel right for me.”
