Mindy Kaling addresses the speculation that her close friend and collaborator B.J. Novak might be the biological father of her children.
In an interview with Marie Claire that was published on Tuesday, the creator of Never Has I Ever, who has kept the paternity of her children a private matter, revealed that speculation about Novak possibly fathering her children — Katherine, who is 4 years old, and Spencer, who is 23 months old — “doesn’t bother” her.
Katherine is the older of the two children. Spencer is 23 months old. According to Kaling, 43, who spoke with the publication, “He is the godparent to both of my kids, and they have such a beautiful bond.”
“So far, [the rumors haven’t] damaged my happiness at all, and it hasn’t harmed my kids or BJ,” she added.
She continued by saying, “If that is what is going to be titillating to people, then I’ll take it.” Kaling also discussed the reasoning for her decision to keep the details of her personal life, including her family, private.
“I want them to be old enough to talk to me about it and how they want me to talk about it,” she said of her children. “I want them to be able to talk to me about it and how they want me to talk about it.”
“The only parent that my children have is me… I believe that I lean on the side of being extremely cautious in order to reduce the number of things that could give them grounds to be upset with me in the future.”
An alumna of “The Mindy Project” discussed her decision to have Novak serve as a godparent to her kid in an interview that aired on “Good Morning America” in the year 2020.
“It is a Christian custom to have godparents, but my religion is Hindu and his religion is Jewish.
Even if it doesn’t make much sense, we like to believe that the Christians really nailed it with this one and that it’s a wonderful tradition “She divulged the information at the time.
“I was like, ‘I’m not missing out on this,’ so he is the godparent to my daughter, and we’re just redefining what that actually means,” she explained. “I’m not missing out on this.”
In addition to this, she stated, “Right now, it just means that he’s in our pandemic pod, so he comes over all the time — he’s fantastic with kids, so it’s been really good to have him in the house.”
The first time Kaling and Novak crossed paths was on the set of The Office, and they dated on and off between the years 2004 and 2007 before deciding to end their relationship.
In spite of the fact that they are no longer romantically involved, the two have remained close friends over the course of the years and have even attended red carpet events together as platonic dates.
In 2014, Novak disclosed to the publication PEOPLE the existence of his amicable relationship with Kaling.
When asked to describe Kaling using a single word, he responded with “complicated.” “They’re a really complicated person, and our friendship is really complicated, but I wouldn’t exchange any of them for anything in the world,” she said.
