The narrative of orphaned Sam (Eva Noblezada), the unluckiest person in the world, is told in Luck, the inaugural film from Skydance Animation, the new workplace of disgraced former Pixar and Disney executive John Lasseter, who certainly knows a thing or two about falling on his feet.
As a result, Pixar analogies are unavoidable. There are parallels between the design of the film and Inside Out, both in the real world and in the “country of luck.” However, unlike Pixar films, which use graphics to tell their stories, Luck provides extensive detail to describe how Luck works in the actual world.
There is still much to enjoy, notably a thrilling pursuit scene starring Simon Pegg’s lucky black cat that matches Jacques Tati in ingenuity. Furthermore, the hazmat bunnies who clean up spilled anguish are adorable and functional.
