Mark Messier is a center in ice hockey. He is one of the few gentlemen who play hockey. He was a professional hockey player for nearly 30 years, including 25 years in the National Hockey League.

Early Years
Mark Messier was born in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada on January 18, 1961, to Doug and Mary-Jean Messier. His siblings’ names are Paul, Mary-Kay, and Jennifer.
Messier moved with his family to Portland, Oregon when he was young, where his father played for the Portland Buckaroos of the Western Hockey League. In 1969, they returned to St. Albert. Messier attended St. Francis Xavier High School in Edmonton afterward.
Career Beginnings
Messier began his junior ice hockey career in 1976 when he joined the Spruce Grove Met of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, for which his father was the coach. In his debut season with the Mets, Messier recorded 66 points in 57 games.
The following season, the team was renamed the St. Albert Saints, and Messier scored 74 points in 54 games as the team’s captain. After this, he joined the playoff-bound Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League.
Messier began the 1978-79 season with the Saints, playing 13 games before joining the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA. He played for both teams for the majority of the season before signing with the Cincinnati Stingers for the remainder.

Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton Oilers selected Messier in the third round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. His scoring numbers rapidly increased over his first several seasons with the squad, despite the fact that he did not initially have a reputation as a leading scorer.
Notably, he scored 50 goals during the 1981–82 season. The next season, he was selected to the NHL’s First All-Star Team at left wing.
Messier switched to center for the 1984 playoffs and had his best season finale to date as he helped lead the Oilers to a comeback victory in the finals, delivering him and the team their first Stanley Cup.

Vancouver Canucks
Messier returned to Canada in 1997 and signed with the Vancouver Canucks.
His first season with the Canucks, in which he accumulated 60 points, was his poorest since entering the NHL, and his subsequent two seasons were cut short by injuries. Messier became a free agent following the 1999-2000 campaign.
Come Back to the Rangers
Messier returned to the Rangers for the 2000-01 season and significantly improves his performance with 67 points. However, the injury forced him to miss half of the following season.
In 2003, Messier climbed to second place on the all-time list of career points scored, just behind Wayne Gretzky, with 1,851 points. In September of 2005, Messier announced his retirement from the NHL.
