Olivia Wilde wanted the “Don’t Worry, Darling” cast to be safe on set. Wilde wanted a younger couple for the film, so she launched “Midsommar” star Florence Pugh and “Dunkirk” breakout Harry Styles. Alice, a suburban housewife who questions her husband Jack and 1950s Victory, California, was played by Wilde.
Shia LaBeouf replaced styles because he was on tour. Wilde knew LaBeouf had to leave the project early in 2020. “His process was not conducive to the ethos of my productions,” Wilde told Variety. “His process necessitates a combative energy, which I don’t believe results in the best performances.”
The studio cited scheduling conflicts, while Wilde cited a “no assholes policy.” Later that year, LaBeouf’s ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs filed a sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse lawsuit against him.
“After this, a lot about his behavior troubled me,” Wilde says. I knew Florence would be in vulnerable situations in a film like this, so my top priority was to make her feel safe and supported. “Our film required a positive energy.”
