William Gary Busey was born in Goose Creek, Texas on June 29, 1944. In the fourth grade, his family relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended both Bell Junior High and Nathan Hale High.
He attended a Kansas community college on a football scholarship before transferring to Pittsburg State University in Kansas. Prior to blowing up his knee and losing his athletic scholarship, he aspired to play professional football.

Career
In the 1960s and ’70s, under the pseudonyms “Teddy Jack Eddy” and “Sprunk,” Busey began his career as an entertainer as a drummer for a band. Busey made his film début in 1974 as a supporting character opposite Clint Eastwood in “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.” In 1978, his breakout performance was in “The Buddy Holly Story.”
Busey portrayed the protagonist and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance. This performance earned him the Best Actor award from the National Society of Film Critics.
Throughout the 1980s, Busey appeared in numerous films, such as “Silver Bullet,” “Insignificance,” “Barbarosa,” and “Bulletproof.” In the “Lethal Weapon” films, Busey portrayed an opponent to the characters played by Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.
