Busey made his film début in 1974 as a supporting character opposite Clint Eastwood in “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.” In 1978, his breakout performance was in “The Buddy Holly Story.”

Busey portrayed the protagonist and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance. This performance earned him the Best Actor award from the National Society of Film Critics.
