At the MTV Video Music Awards in 2022, Kane Brown made history by becoming the first male country singer to perform on the show since its establishment in 1984.
This moment will go down in the annals of music history. Kacey Musgraves and Taylor Swift had been the only country performers to gain a performance placement at the high-profile MTV ceremony before this Sunday’s event. However, this will no longer be the case after this Sunday’s event.
After a sponsored mixed-reality promo set to his upcoming smash song “Be Like That,” Chris Brown gave a live performance of his pop-influenced tune “Grand” in front of an audience in Fort Lee, New Jersey, which is nearby. While singing out the lyrics to the song on the stage that was decked with neon lights, Brown wore a beige vest and slacks that complemented the vest and were brown and black.
Brown was the only country artist to receive a nomination for the 2021 Video Music Awards, and he did so for his hit song “Worldwide Beautiful,” which was entered into the competition for the Video For Good category.
Brown, who is only 28 years old but is already a country music superstar, walked the red carpet before his performance and chatted with ET’s Rachel Smith about creating history while performing on the VMAs stage.
Brown expressed his emotions over the performance of “Grand” by saying, “I feel terrific, you know, I’m kind of unhappy that I’m not singing a country song.”
“But on the other hand, it’s not a bad thing because people will be thinking, ‘Oh, this is a country artist. What is he trying to say by singing this song? Then, let’s cross our fingers and hope that they fall down a rabbit hole and find a lot more artists working in the country world.
You shouldn’t expect him to completely cross over into the world of pop music, even though he will be experimenting with it on Sunday. “No, I mean I got a 17-song album coming out, and there are only about two pop songs on there,” he said again. “I’m not a pop artist.”
Adding that the figure is closer to two and a half, which he attributes entirely to the track that he has with his wife, Katelyn Brown. Brown continued by saying, “The one with my wife is kind of poppy.” “But no, I’ll never switch over to pop without any other genres in between.”
