What to Know About the New British Monarch, King Charles III?
As a result of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, her eldest son Charles is now formally King Charles III. The new king, who is 73 years old, was the Prince of Wales — a designation designated for future British kings — for the longest time in the history of the British monarchy.
“There is no way around it, he is not in his prime of youth,” said Julian Payne, a royal commentator for CBS News and former press secretary for then-Prince Charles. This will be replaced by more than 50 years of experience on the international stage.
He feels that Charles will handle his duty as king in the same manner as his mother did as queen.
Payne stated, “He, like his mother, believes this is about duty and service.” “You do your duties. You give the requested service to the nation upon request. You do not seek it out, nor do you attempt to obtain it; however, when it is presented to you, you accept it and perform to the best of your ability.”
King Charles III released a statement on Thursday expressing his sorrow on the passing of his mother. “The passing of my cherished mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a time of profound sorrow for me and my entire family,” he stated.
“We deeply lament the demise of a revered monarch and a beloved mother. I am certain that her passing will be keenly felt by innumerable people across the nation, the Realms, the Commonwealth, and the world. During this time of loss and transition, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by the knowledge that The Queen was held in such widespread esteem and affection.”
Charles is in many ways the first contemporary successor to the British throne: he was sent to school rather than being tutored secretly at the palace, and he later earned a Bachelor of Arts from Cambridge.
During the 1970s, the young prince served in both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy, being assigned to many warships.
However, according to CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips, Prince Charles’s position up to this point has essentially consisted of waiting and carving himself a significant role while doing so.

The Turbulent, Mission-critical Love Life of Charles
In many ways, Charles’ public life has been defined by the women with whom he has shared it. Early on, the most important responsibility of the future monarch was to locate a wife and create heirs.
Lady Diana Spencer appeared to be the ideal match, despite the fact that there were signals of impending difficulties. The wedding of a 32-year-old man and a 20-year-old bride was an international media event.
Two Sons, Princes William and Harry, Followed Dutifully
However, it became evident to the entire world that the royal couple was unhappy together. The tabloids dubbed them “The Glooms” as they appeared in an increasing number of images looking distant.
In their highly publicized divorce drama, Prince Charles was frequently cast as the antagonist by a greedy tabloid press.
When asked post-split if Charles’ longtime confidante and love interest Camilla Parker Bowles played a role in the breakup of her relationship, Diana responded, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
In 1997, after Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris, Charles’ public image was so shattered that many questioned whether he could ever become king. Years of being viewed as a devoted parent to his two bereaved boys were required for the prince to emerge from the cloud.
But he did emerge, and in 2005 he married Camilla in the first civil marriage for a British royal in England that was not religious.
Early in 2022, Queen Elizabeth II stated that when Charles becomes king, it is her “sincere wish that Camilla will be recognized as Queen Consort while continuing her own faithful service” to the United Kingdom.
Charles stated in a statement that he and Camilla were “very cognizant of the honor that my mother’s request represents.”
