DAZN Agreement and Lawsuit
In 2018, DAZN reached a $365 million agreement with Alvarez to show his next ten fights exclusively. It was one of the richest sports contracts in history at the time. Between June 2018 and June 2019, Canelo earned $95 million from his various income sources, thanks in significant part to this arrangement and a number of endorsements.
The transaction was expected to be uncomplicated. DAZN would pay Golden Boy $40 million each fight for ten fights in 2019 and 2020, for a total of $1 billion. Canelo’s cut for each fight would be $35 million.
In September 2020, Canelo filed a lawsuit against DAZN, Golden Boy Promotions, and Golden Boy’s CEO Oscar De La Hoya for breach of contract. His last fight was scheduled for November 2019 against Sergey Kovalev, per the file.
The complaint sought a total of $280 million in damages, sponsorship losses, and gate income.
