Early Years of Jo Koy
Jo Koy, also known as Joseph Glenn Herbert, was born on June 2, 1971, in Tacoma, Washington. His American father was stationed in the Philippines with the United States Air Force when he married Koy’s Filipino mother, who managed a Filipino rock band.
When Jo was 13 years old, his parents split, and thereafter his mother raised all of her children on her own. As soon as he graduated from high school in Tacoma, Washington, the family relocated to Los Vegas.
The family relocated to Los Vegas to be near Jo’s grandmother, who was ill. The origin of Jo’s stage name is a childhood nickname his family gave him. Jo attributes his acting and comedy skills to his mother, usually sharing tales about her throughout his comedy performances. His mother pushed him to perform in school talent events and hold impromptu performances for his family and friends.

In the mid-1990s, he began performing stand-up in Las Vegas and gained recognition when he became a regular in the show “Catch a Rising Star” at the MGM Grand. This prompted his relocation to Los Angeles. After performing at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Jo rented the Huntridge Theater and sold tickets for his own comedy gigs door-to-door.
