In 1963, Fernández wed Maria del Refugio Abarca Villaseñor. Their son, Vicente Jr., was born prematurely and required incubation as a result.

In addition to Alejandro and Gerardo, the couple had an adopted daughter named Alejandra. On numerous occasions, Fernández performed with Alejandro, and Vicente Jr. was kidnapped and held for ransom by an organized crime ring in 1998; his finger was removed as a warning. Later in life, Fernández struggled with health concerns. In 2002, he defeated prostate cancer, and later, he defeated liver cancer.
