Billy Strings Early Life
William Lee Apostol became Billy Strings on October 3, 1992, in Lansing, Michigan. When he was two years old, his father overdosed on heroin, and his mother remarried Terry Barber, a skilled amateur bluegrass musician. Barber is regarded as Billy’s father.
The family first relocated to Muir, Michigan, and Morehead, Kentucky. His parents developed methamphetamine addictions when he was still in his preteen years.
At thirteen, he fled the house and went through a phase of problematic drug use. Eventually, his family found sobriety, and Billy quit using alcohol and potent drugs.
Barber greatly influenced his stepson, who exposed him to classical bluegrass musicians like Doc Watson, Del McCoury, David Grisman, Bill Monroe, John Hartford, Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs, and Larry Sparks at a young age.
In his adolescence, Strings played in hard rock and indie rock bands. They were influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Widespread Panic, Phish, Grateful Dead, Def Leppard, Between the Buried and Me, and Black Sabbath.
Apostol’s aunt, impressed by his proficiency in various traditional bluegrass instruments, gave him the stage name Billy Strings.
Billy Strings Career
Strings returned to bluegrass music after graduating from high school, determined to find a better way, and went to Traverse City, a northern Michigan town with a thriving music and arts culture.
Strings met Don Julin, a local mandolin enthusiast three decades his senior, in Traverse City. Strings’ stepfather had taught him the melodies. Therefore their duet specialized in their complex, quick, and loud performances.
Strings, on the other hand, discovered the rich junction of bluegrass and jam-band culture pioneered by Yonder Mountain String Band and Greensky Bluegrass.
Local pickers were intrigued with Strings’ skills when he performed at an open-mike night at a club called Hayloft, and he quickly found a mentor and picking partner in mandolinist Don Julin, who made a duo album with Strings called Rock of Ages.
(In 2014, Strings released Fiddle Tune X, a homemade solo album.) He also played in a bluegrass band called M-23 Strings and established himself as one of the Mitten State’s most promising musicians.

Strings moved to Nashville in early 2016, where the skilled newcomer did not go ignored. He released Turmoil & Tinfoil in September 2017, an album in which he blended a more comprehensive range of sounds and influences into his music.
Glenn Brown, who has previously worked with Greensky Bluegrass and Luke Winslow-King, produced the record. Strings released his second solo album, Home, in 2019 after joining with roots music label Rounder Records.
It was nominated for a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. It was a successful release, top washing the Heatseekers and Bluegrass Albums lists. It debuted at #11 on the Emerging Artists Chart as well.
Billy Failing (banjo), Royal Masat (bass), Jarrod Walker (mandolin), and Alex Hargreaves make up his traveling band (fiddle). He collaborated with James Casey (saxophone) on a series of concerts by Bill Kreutzmann’s Billy & the Kids in 2021.
He performed as a solo musician at the Newport Folk Festival in July 2021, among other events. Renewal, his third studio album, was released on September 24, 2021.
