Eileen Ryan, an experienced actress and the mother of composer and songwriter Michael Penn and actors Sean Penn and Christopher Penn, passed away at her home on Sunday at the age of 94, according to her representatives speaking to TheWrap.
Ryan, who was born in New York City in 1927, married actor and director Leo Penn in 1957 after meeting him during “The Iceman Cometh” rehearsals; the couple remained together until Penn’s death in 1998.
Ryan portrayed the ex-wife of a businessman who discovers that his life is a role in a television show and that he is a failing actor on the verge of bankruptcy, in the “Twilight Zone” episode “A World of Difference” during her nearly 60-year career in television.
Ryan also appeared in episodes of “Bonanza,” “Little House on the Prairie,” “Matlock,” “CSI:” “Without a Trace,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” In 2014, she appeared in an episode of the HBO series “Getting On.”
Ryan appeared in the 1986 film “At Close Range” with her sons Sean and Chris, playing the grandmother of a family of criminals, with Sean and Chris playing two brothers who want to join their family’s unsavory business.
Ryan also appeared in the 1988 drama “Judgment at Berlin,” directed and co-written by Leo Penn and starring Martin Sheen. In addition, she appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia” and Penn’s 1995 film “The Crossing Guard.”
