Sharing the News by Chris Hemsworth

Hemsworth should be commended for sharing his concerns about getting Alzheimer‘s with millions of people. It serves as a reminder to all of us to keep an eye on our health and lower our risk of illness in the future.

Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia in general, is threatening to overwhelm health-care systems around the world.

There are up to 500,000 dementia patients in Australia alone, with about 1.6 million caregivers. Around 450 persons per day are expected to be diagnosed by 2036. Understanding how APOE4 affects the risk of the principal cause of dementia may therefore be critical in preventing cases.

However, not everyone who carries the APOE4 gene develops Alzheimer’s. This implies that a mix of environmental variables may interact with the gene to cause some people to get Alzheimer’s while others do not.

Is There a Way to Be Certain?

There are so-called “risk genes,” such as APOE-e4. However, there are “deterministic genes” – those that directly cause Alzheimer’s disease, ensuring that anyone who carries them will develop the condition.

Scientists have discovered these genes in only a few hundred families globally, accounting for fewer than 1% of Alzheimer’s cases.

People who carry these genes are more likely to acquire Alzheimer’s disease before the age of 65, a condition known as early-onset Alzheimer’s.
