Before relocating to London in 1980 and changing its name to the Birthday Party, the band issued numerous records.
The Birthday Party immediately gained a cult following after appearing on John Peel‘s British Broadcasting Corporation radio programme, which led to a record contract with 4AD and the publication of their trademark album, Junkyard (1982).

“Where the Wild Roses Grow,” a collaboration with Australian singer Kylie Minogue from the 1996 album Murder Ballads, was the band’s biggest commercial triumph. Bargeld quit the Bad Seeds in 2003, but the release of the double album Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus (2004) proved that the band was still alive and well.
Harvey parted from Cave and the Bad Seeds in 2009, bringing an end to one of the most enduring postpunk collaborations.
The remaining members of the band persisted with the austere Push the Sky Away (2013). The unintentional death of Cave’s 15-year-old son in 2015 became the focal point of Skeleton Tree (2016). Ghosteen, a double album, was published in 2019.
