Lauren London Discusses Struggles with Biracial Identity
Lauren London was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 5, 1984, to an Ashkenazi Jewish father and an African-American mother.
Lauren was raised by her mother following her parents’ divorce when she was three years old. In the People Everyday podcast, she told Janine Rubenstein:
“I grew up in a household with my mum. My father did not live with us when I was growing up. My parents divorced when I was a child.
I was three at the time, therefore my experience is that of my mother because I grew up with a single Black mother.”
Lauren told Under My Skin that her cousins mocked her for not being ‘Black enough’. Lauren described herself as “that Black girl” after attending white summer camps.
For a time, the performer struggled with her bi-racial identity, but she is now proud of it. She explained:
“I don’t pay any attention to what other people think about my identity. It’s their problem if they think I’m not dark enough.
I’m content with who I am, and it is what it is. I’m a Black lady, like my mother, and I like my father. I love all aspects of me.”
Lauren’s idol, Barbra Streisand, assisted her in accepting her bi-racial identity. “I’m the odd and awkward little half-black, half-Jewish girl,” Lauren told Complex Magazine.
“I make an effort to be myself. Barbra Streisand did not resemble Vivien Leigh or Lucille Ball: she was Barbra Streisand. She left her mark.”
Lauren Enjoyed Filming ‘You People’ Because It Connected Her to Her Jewish Origins
Lauren accidentally ignored her Jewish heritage after her parents divorced. Her father’s absence cut her off from her Jewish identity.
Lauren told Janine Rubenstein that filming You People in Los Angeles fed her Jewish roots:
“Shooting in Los Angeles felt personal. And some of the sites where we shot it, as well as some of the locations. “I loved that they were Jewish because there was some stuff I learned from being in the movie that I didn’t know.”
Lauren London is a Single Mother of Two Sons
The famous actress is the mother of two lovely boys. She welcomed her 12-year-old kid, Kameron Carter, with her off-again boyfriend, Lil Wayne.
After splitting from the rapper, she began dating Ermias Asghedom, better known as Nipsey Hussle, and gave birth to her second kid, Kross Asghedom, who is now five years old. They were married until the rapper died on March 31, 2019.
