Marvel Stars Respond to Robert Downey Jr.’s Return to the Mcu for Two ‘Avengers’ Movies
Everyone is talking about Robert Downey Jr.‘s comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), including his former co-stars.
Following Downey’s announcement on Saturday, July 27, at San Diego Comic-Con that he will be playing Doctor Doom in the next Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, and Gwyneth Paltrow all wanted to weigh in.
“I don’t understand, are you a villain now?” Paltrow, 51, commented on an Instagram post shared by Downey on Saturday to summarize his surprising news. The Sliding Doors star first appeared in the Marvel universe in 2008 as Pepper Potts, the love interest of Downey’s former character, Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, in the superhero’s origin film.
The Hulk, also played by Ruffalo, 56, was one of the Avengers members who left his mark on Downey’s post. It featured a video of Downey’s Comic-Con unveiling along with a picture of the actor peering into a new mask with the statement, “New mask, same task.”
The actor from Poor Things wrote, “Hey Brat, green suits you.”
The 53-year-old actor expressed his approval by leaving a remark on an Instagram post published on Saturday by directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who announced their confirmation as the filmmakers of the upcoming Avengers movies.
“Well done, gentlemen! The Avengers franchise’s Hawkeye, played by actor James Renner, said, “We’ve missed you,” in response to the post that featured several images from Comic-Con.
“They need you guys,” Frank Grillo, who portrays Brock Rumlow in the MCU, added to the Russo brothers’ tweet.
Other celebrities commented on the image as well. Hannah Waddingham, star of Ted Lasso, remarked, “Now that is f—ing cool!” while Garrett Hedland posted three fire symbols in agreement.
In the meantime, Downey’s and the Russo brothers’ Instagram postings were liked by Ryan Reynolds, who plays the MCU superhero Deadpool.
In response to Downey’s post, the Russos said, “We’ve always said green is your color.”
After making her MCU debut in 20212’s Black Widow, Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena Belova, attended Comic-Con and talked to Variety about Downey’s revelation after the publication shared a video of the reveal with her. Pugh, 28, added, “I bet it went insane in there.”
Playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in the movie based on the comic book character’s origin story, Downey was among the first actors to star in an MCU production. In two more solo movies and numerous Avengers team-ups, he played the same role.
Tony Stark was one of the few original heroes that died in Avengers: Endgame as a result of Thanos’ famed snap.
