Jujutsu Kaisen is changing the way women are being portrayed in shōnen anime

It’s pushing the boundaries and women are no longer taking a back seat to the overpowered males

Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the best animes that is airing currently, and it proved that after winning the Crunchyroll Best Anime Award. Usually when a lot of people talk about some show, it’s easy to call it “overrated,” but with this you need to believe the hype. One major reason is how it’s redefining the shōnen genre. It’s story is one that keeps the modern audience is mind and adjusts the cliche scenes accordingly.

Bringing the right kind of attention to female characters

Somewhere down the middle in Season 1, we see a scene of Nobara Kugisaki and Maki Zenin, who walk together after Maki happened to stop a fight between Nobara and a student from another school. This was when Nobara realises that Maki has no “cursed” powers like the other students at the Jujutsu sorcerer school, and she asks why she still wants to be a sorcerer. Maki then replies that she’s doing it inorder to spite her family who had looked down on her all her life. Nobara replies by saying that she respects Maki.

It’s just one of the many scenes that makes the series so special. The new episode has shown how the subgenre treats it’s women just as equally as the men.

Breaking stereotypes

Women may not have had the best representation in shōnen series. A lot of sexism and fan service is typical but at the same time there are women in shōnen series who are insanely powerful and has strong personalities.

Despite being powerful or intelligent, they do get grossly sexualized at times, sometimes just for comic relief. Since shōnen means “young man,” most of these often get overlooked, but it’s refreshing to see a modern anime brining the right kind of attention to these matters.
