The subtle hint was given in the trailer and is linking the mysterious protagonist to the warrior
Lewis Tan’s Mortal Kombat character Cole Young is shrouded in mystery but from the trailer, it looks like he’s the spirit of Scorpion reborn. The new trailer has piqued the audience’s attention and also poses some interesting theories, and we do know that it’s going to be different from the games.
But the main question is of course about Tan’s character. Numerous fan theories suggest that Cole Young is linked to both Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
The official plot release for Mortal Kombat, which came long before the trailer talked about the Young family’s history is what made Cole special, but then he was being hunted by Sub-Zero for unknown reasons. Of course we see the iconic dragon insignia or “birthmark” on his chest, which places him as a contender for the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament. Before that, Cole was an MMA fighter who lost on purpose to put food on the table for his family.
Mortal Kombat makers had done some truly deceiving marketing with the character that at a time fans even believed that he was actually Johnny Cage or Sub-Zero’s brother Kuai Liang, who became the second Sub-Zero after Bi Han, Sam Taslim’s character in the movie ends up becoming Noob Saibot.
His Scorpion vision
In a scene, Cole stares at a mirror and sees Scorpion staring back which terrifies him. The common theory is he inhabits Scorpion’s spirit after the previous holder, Hanzo Hasashi and his family got murdered by Sub-Zero. Also, Scorpion is not wearing his mask in that vision, so it looks like he could be appealing to Cole to take the new mantle and take care of Sub-Zero.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s rivalry is one of the best parts of the Mortal Kombat lore. What are your opinions?
