Fans were pleasantly surprised to see Jared Leto’s Joker in Snyder’s cut of Justice League
Zack Snyder is a director who interacts a great deal with the comic book fans of superheroes, and recently gave some insight into why he decided to bring back Jared Leto’s Joker into his upcoming cut of Justice League. Snyder is making his return to the DCEU after departing in 2017. What happened next was a disaster, but we are not getting into all that.
In his cut, Snyder will be using his shot footage which never made it to the 2017 movie and has also conducted reshoots for the four-hour long movie that will be premiering on HBO Max. Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Ray Fisher returned to reshoot for the movie, but the biggest surprise from the trailer was Leto’s Joker.
The Joker’s return
Snyder spoke about cold-calling Leto and asking him to film some scenes. The trailer ends with Joker reviving the famous “We live in a society” dialogue while appearing during Batman’s Knightmare scene.
Snyder spoke to I Minutemen that he brought Leto back to bring out Batman and Joker’s long history in a way that he won’t be able to in the future. As many fans, Snyder also believes that Batman and Joker’s conflict is central to the DC universe and especially to the DCEU. He said that bringing Joker back was his small way of giving fans a little taste of that conflict which he originally envisioned.
Leaving a final mark
Justice League will probably be the last mark Snyder can leave on the DCEU and he is absolutely right in believing that Batman and Joker’s dynamic must be explored in every universe.
Leto seems more than willing to reprise the role in the future, but Affleck and Snyder’s roles seem doubtful, so this is a good chance as any to see the two characters together for the last time.
