Having started his career at 18, how much is he currently worth?
Celebrity fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger was in the news recently after selling his Greenwich estate for a whopping $45 million and relocating to Palm Beach, Florida. Him and his wife Dee Ocleppo are currently looking for new property over there.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Hilfiger and Ocleppo brought the property in 2010 for $31.3 million and it was listed last year by Sotheby’s International Realty. They got a buyer just weeks after the listing, and at that time, his identity was not revealed, but the buyer was represented by Sally Slater of Douglas Elliman. Incidentally, Hilfiger’s first wife Susie had also listed her Greenwich property for $40 million as she was relocating as well.
Thomas Jacob Hilfiger, born March 24, 1951 started his career by co-founding a retail chain of jeans/fashion stores known as People’s Place in upstate New York in the 1970s. He was 18 at the time. At first, he used to buy jeans and customise them for reselling. He opened the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation in 1985 by designing preppy outfits for men, and was backed by the Murjani Group, based in India. As the company gained momentum, they started expanding to women’s clothing and other luxury items such as perfumes and soon went public in 1992.
Hilfiger relied on the fashion shown in music videos and also celebrities such as American R&B artist Aaliyah during the 1990s.

So what is his current net worth? At present, Hilfiger is worth at an estimated amount of $450 million. One would think he is already a billionaire after creating a global name for himself. The reason is because he sold off a major share of his company in 1989 to investors Silas Chou and Lawrence Stroll. It’s thanks to their guiding that Hilfiger became a renowned name worldwide.
