The movie will now be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber
Netflix has just found a new director for their upcoming movie adaptation of popular video game Tom Clancy’s The Division. It was initially set to be directed by David Leitch, who had helmed projects like John Wick, Atomic Blonde तथा Deadpool 2, but Leitch had to step down later and instead said he will only serve as the producer. The movie, which has finalised Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain has no official release date as of now.
The new director
After Leitch left from the director’s chair, Rawson Marshall Thurber had been roped in by Netflix, according to a report by Collider. Thurber has previously written and directed movies like Dodgeball: An Underdog Story, Central Intelligence, Skyscraper, and the upcoming Netflix original Red Notice.
He had worked with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the latter three films, but Johnson doesn’t seem to be part of The Division. Thurber will be writing the movie’s script along with Ellen Shanman.
A movie about a pandemic
The movie has been in development since 2018, but it would get extra attention right now due to the pandemic-focused story. The game is set in a futuristic New York City in the aftermath of a viral pandemic, and the protagonist is a special agent of the Strategic Homeland Division who is given the job to rebuild the group’s operations in Manhattan, along with investigating the nature of the outbreak and look out for criminal activity.
The story is loosely based on the game, which in turn was adapted from a Tom Clancy Novel. Clancy’s novels were made into many successful movies, games, and TV series so The Division will also be delivering the same military thriller energy present in his other works..
