The directors described him as a “unique character”
The Russo Brothers recently teased Chris Evans’ villain role in their upcoming Netflix big-budget spy thriller The Gray Man. The movie is an adaptation of Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel of the same name. The directors first spoke about making the movie in 2014 after they were done making Captain America: The Winter Soldier and hadn’t yet made their mark on Hollywood.
After making Avengers: Infinity War dan Avengers: Endgame, two of the highest grossing movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the upcoming Apple TV+ movie Cherry starring Tom Holland, the directors started talking about their next project.
The Gray Man details
For the highly anticipated thriller, the budget is $200 million, making it Netflix’s most expensive feature film yet. The movie has an impressive cast, including Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Chris Evans and Indian actor Dhanush. Evans will be playing the main villain, after previously being the villain in 2019’s Knives Out.
While appearing on the Lights Camera Barstool podcast, the Russo Brothers briefly spoke about the movie, calling it a “modern interpretation of a spy thriller” inspired by the James Bond franchise. Joe also spoke about Evans’ role as the villain, saying it’s a really interesting character and (Joe) thinks Evans will be flexing quite a bit in this role.
The movie was set to begin production in December, but got delayed until March 2021. Gosling will be playing the lead role of Court Gentry, a former CIA operative turned assassin, while Evans will be playing his counterpart Lloyd Hansen, who previously worked with Gentry at the CIA. Their conflict soon starts playing out on a global scale.
The director duo had stated that the movie will be an espionage thriller similar to The Winter Soldier. The movie had great potential to be one of Netflix’s biggest productions ever, and could spawn a franchise, since there are a total of 10 books in the Gray Man series.
