It’s been a good run for one of Netflix’s first originals

Netflix will not be making an eighth season of their hit series Orange is the New Black. We will sadly have to bid farewell to Piper Chapman and the other inmates.

The series is created by Jenji Kohan and adapted from Piper Kerman’s 2010 memoir “Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison” and first premieres in July 2013. It helped Netflix become the major television producer it is today. The final season premiered on July 26, 2019.

The series has Taylor Schilling playing Piper Chapman, based off of Piper Kerman, who gets arrested ten years after smuggling drug money to her partner Alex. The rest of the story follows her life behind bars and her various encounters with the other prisoners and authorities. The show explores the past lives of the other prisoners through flashbacks.

Aside from Schilling, the cast includes Laura Prepon, Uzo Aduba, Natasha Lyonne, Kate Mulgrew, Laverne Cox, Taryn Manning and many other talented stars. Aduba won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2015 for the Orange is the New Black season 2 episode “Hugs Can Be Deceiving.”

Netflix announced in October 2018 that season 7 will be the final chapter. This decision came less than 4 months after season 6 started streaming. They also shared a 60-second clip of the cast members sharing their experiences and expressing their gratitude on working in the show.

Orange is the New Black became Netflix’s third original series in 2013, following House of Cards and Hemlock Grove. With 7 seasons and 91 episodes, it currently stands as Netflix’s longest running show. It also presented a modern media landscape on how films and television should be distributed in the future. It brought in an era of innovative streaming to showrunners.
