Early Years
Chadwick Aaron Boseman was born in Anderson, South Carolina on November 29, 1976. Boseman, who was raised in a Christian working-class family, took an early interest in the performing arts.
In his youth, he performed in a church choir. During his senior year of high school, he composed a play that was inspired by the shooting death of a close friend. The play was then staged and presented at his high school.
In 1995, following his high school graduation, Boseman enrolled at Howard University. There, he pursued his studies in the performing arts and worked toward a degree in directing. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing in 2000.
Chadwick attended a drama program at the British American Drama Academy in London, England, which was affiliated with Oxford University, over one summer.
Chadwick realized that he had to learn how to act before he could become a competent director. He graduated from the Digital Film Academy in New York City, where he studied acting extensively, in the end.
Initially in his career, Boseman resided in Brooklyn and worked as a drama instructor in Harlem, New York. In 2008, he determined he wanted to pursue an acting profession full-time. This resulted in his relocation to Los Angeles.
Before moving to Los Angeles, Boseman had previously been in numerous television series, including “Third Watch,” “Law & Order,” “CSI: New York,” and “ER.” He continued to compose during this time, and one of his plays was staged in Chicago.
Chadwick secured a recurring part in the television series “Lincoln Heights” upon his arrival in Los Angeles. In “The Express: The Ernie Davis Story,” he also made his film debut. By 2010, he has booked a recurring part in the television series “Personas Inconnus.”
Boseman’s big break came in 2013 when he landed the lead role in the film “42.” In the film, he portrayed baseball legend, Jackie Robinson. He appeared in the independent film “The Kill Hole” that year.
In 2014, Chadwick was cast in “Draft Day,” an additional sports film starring Kevin Costner. In the film “Get on Up,” he portrayed James Brown as the year came to a close. In 2016, Boseman returned to the limelight, beginning with his portrayal of the Egyptian god Thoth in “Gods of Egypt.”
His most notable job of that year, though, was as T’Challa in “Captain America.” It was the first time the superhero Black Panther appeared in a Marvel film.
In 2018, he released “Black Panther,” a Marvel picture devoted to the superhero. The highly-anticipated picture grossed about $1.35 billion at the box office and cemented Boseman’s reputation as a world-renowned performer.
He reprised his role as Black Panther in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” with the latter becoming the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.8 billion in box office earnings.
In the same year as the release of “Avengers: Endgame,” Boseman appeared in the action picture “21 Bridges.” Also in 2019, Chadwick joined the cast of the Netflix war film “Da 5 Bloods,” directed by Spike Lee.
